Supermarkets monitored for over inflating prices

The current financial climate is affecting us all, with higher prices in stores for many of our most basic items, however, the Organización de Consumidores y Usuario (OCU) has carried out a study to find out which supermarkets will be our allies when it comes to accessing essential products, and those who are not doing their bit to make our lives easier.

In this complex scenario, the OCU has made a record of 156 products that can be found in Alcampo, Caprabo, Carrefour, Condis, Dia, El Corte Inglés, Eroski, Hipercor and Mercadona, in order to know in which of these shopping basket prices are better for our pockets.

It should be noted that, in general terms, the rise in energy and raw material prices and the war in Ukraine have increased prices in large supermarket chains by 9.4%.

Along these lines, the OCU points out in its report that Carrefour and Mercadona have accumulated an average price increase in food, hygiene and drugstore products of 12.1% and 11.4%, respectively, since March 2021. While in El Corte Inglés and Hipercor prices increased by 7.7%. However, both Mercadona and Carrefour continue to remain among the “cheapest” national chains, along with Alcampo, detailed the OCU.

Among the most affected products are oils (34%), fish (16%), packaged foods (11%) and dairy products (11%). In this regard, the OCU warns that, if the increases are maintained, it will mean an additional cost of 500 euro in the shopping basket during this year.

For this reason, the OCU is asking the Government to articulate measures to protect the most economically vulnerable households.
