400,000 euro in cash found in airport luggage

Officers from the Guardia Civil at Valencia airport have seized a total of 400,000 euro in bundles of bills, which a man was trying to hide inside one of his suitcases.

Although the incident was reported this week, it happened in May, when Guardia Civil officers, who were scanning the baggage scanner on a flight to Turkey, observed organic forms compatible with currency in the contents of the case.

The agents located the passenger to whom this suitcase belonged and proceeded to open it in his presence. Among the belongings, numerous bundles of bills worth 400,000 euro were found which hadn“t been declared.

The suspect could not prove the origin of the money and so the agents seized the cash under the Currency Intervention Act, which was directed to the Money Laundering Protection Service. In addition, the Guardia Civil proceeded to impose the corresponding administrative sanction for these events based on the Money Laundering Prevention Law.
