AN infantry machine gun from the Spanish Civil War has been confiscated and the 59 year old owner detained by the Mossos d’Esquadra

Cataluña Police were informed, via a tip-off, that the firearm was in situ in the basement at a private house at Cassà de la Selva, Girona.

Although the owner denied possession of a weapon, officers, along with members of the Cassà de la Selva Local Police, entered the house where they found the machine gun, in full working order, wrapped in a blanket under a cement washbasin along with the tripod, which was also wrapped up in a sheet.

He was arrested and charged as the alleged perpetrator of a crime of possession of weapons and explosives.

The detainee has a dozen records for various criminal offenses including robbery with violence, threats and driving under the influence of alcohol. In addition, this is the second time he has been arrested for possession of weapons and explosives.
