The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) predicts that more than 50 percent of the European population will be infected by Omicron in the next 6-8 weeks, according to the regional director of the World Health Organization (WHO) for Europe, Hans Kluge.
According to Kluge, in the European region more than 7 million new cases of covid-19 have been reported in the first week of 2022, which is more than double in a period of two weeks. As of 10 January, 26 countries report that more than 1 percent of their population is infected with COVID-19 each week.
Furthermore, 50 out of 53 countries in Europe and Central Asia have already reported Omicron cases. “It is rapidly becoming the dominant virus in Western Europe and is now spreading in the Balkans,” the WHO Europe regional director warned.
