The winning lottery number for Spain’s world-famous El Gordo (the “Fat one”) Christmas lotto was drawn just after mid-day today. The total prize fund was a whopping €2.4 billion, €28 million more than in 2019, and the winning number was 72897.
As is tradition in Spain, the lucky five-digit figure was sung out by two children from San Ildefonso school shortly after noon. The winner will be rewarded with a prize of € 4 million.
The winning lottery number was sold at various “lotteria y apuesta” sales points throughout Spain which included the following locations: Punta Humbría (Huelva), Reus (Tarragona), Granada, Madrid, Boñar (León), O Grove (Pontevedra), Bilbao, Granadilla de Abona (Santa Cruz de Tenerife), Javea (Alicante), Cáceres, El Puerto de Santamaría (Cádiz), Córdoba, Haría (Las Palmas), San Pedro del Pinatar (Murcia), Vigo, O Porriño (Pontevedra), Salamanca, Bonavista (Tarragona), Oliva (Valencia), Alfara del Patriarca (Valencia), Zamora
Third prize, number 52472, was called out just after 11:00 this morning but by 12:20 the second prize had still had not been drawn.
This year the draw took place at Madrid’s Teatro Real without an audience because of the Coronavirus pandemic. Doors opened at around 07:15 to allow the press and the children to enter.
