A new process has been introduced by the DGT which enables UK Nationals to exchange their driving licenses online.

As a result of the Coronavirus pandemic, it has been difficult to obtain an appointment to exchange UK driving licenses for Spanish driving licenses. To speed up the exchange of driving licenses and to ensure that UK Nationals can begin the process before the end of the year when the UK officially leaves the European Union, the DGT has developed a new system which went live on the DGT website yesterday.

The process involves two steps. The first is to make an application to the DGT before 30 December. If you have a digital certificate / CLAVE this can be done via the online portal or by calling 060. In some provinces it may also be possible to obtain an appointment by downloading the form and taking it to the local DGT office. You should ring ahead to confirm this. A representative (e.g. a gestor) may also apply on your behalf. You do not need to have a residency certificate or TIE, but you will require an NIE.

Three days after submitting your application, you may request an appointment with the DGT to do the driving license exchange. This appointment can be booked on the DGT’s website.

As long as your application has been submitted before 30 December, and the UK authorities have verified your licence by the end of the year, your appointment to exchange your licence can be after 1 January 2021. The driving license exchange must be within the first 6 months of next year.

To complete the driving license exchange, a residency certificate / TIE is required. If you are in the process of applying for residency you should choose a later date for your appointment with the DGT.

Irrespective of whether a UK licence has been verified for exchange by the end of the year, you will be able to drive in Spain using your UK licence for 6 months from 1 January 2021. The future rules on exchange and recognition of UK licences in Spain are still subject to negotiation.
